Welcome to Session 5 Teams ⭐

Session 5 is preparing their mission, and this is going to be an extraordinary Session because we’re going to have 6 teams! Team Mercury is going to join the journey within Team Mars, Team Jupiter, Team Neptune, Team Saturn and Team Venus. Let’s present to you our stellar Teams.,

Team Mars

💚 The team will contribute to Django

Lilian - Navigator

Hello, I’m Lilian, an experienced software engineer, working mainly with the Django web framework and PostgreSQL database. I’ve worked on projects with teams at early stage startups as well as large organizations.
I also write a weekly newsletter where I report stats on contributions to Django, and share interesting tidbits about Django, PostgreSQL, open source, personal projects, and more.
When I’m not building software products, I enjoy cooking with friends, volunteering at local events, and training to become a radio station DJ so I can one day run my own radio show.

Sean Helvey - Captain

Sean Helvey

Hey, I’m Sean! I create and maintain software that helps social workers at Koinonia Family Services using Python, Django, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). I started coding in finance classes at Cal Poly SLO before getting a MS in Computer Science at NYU. I ran a software consultancy and taught at a web development bootcamp in Colorado before moving back home to California. I really like hiking, surfing, dancing, reading, yoga, and boardgames. My favorite genre of book is magical realism written by Japanese authors and I enjoy euro style engine builder boardgames like Scythe and Terra Mystica. I go to ecstatic dance often but have recently been trying east and west coast swing. Also I just started a west African drumming class and am learning more about permaculture gardening. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you!

📝 The team will contribute to djangoCMS

Fabian Braun - Navigator

Fabian

As a member of the Django Software Foundation and business builder, Fabian thrives for collaborative development environments. He became a core contributor to django CMS in 2022 and a Fellow of the django CMS Association in 2023, maintaining and developing this open-source content management system. Fabian's work spans technical contributions, community building, and mentorship.

Keanya Phelps - Captain

keanya

I’m a mid-life career changer who found my way into tech through a coding bootcamp and it completely changed the trajectory of my life. Before tech, I worked in roles that centered around people, process, and purpose, which now inform how I approach software development, project management, and community building.

I'm passionate about creating spaces where people feel seen and supported, especially those navigating new beginnings, like I once was. Django played a huge role in helping me grow as a developer and find my tech community, so giving back through DjangoCon US feels like coming full circle.

Outside of work, I’m a proud wife and mom (both human and canine!), lover of house music, I’m someone who believes in dancing things out and building people up.

Team Neptune

💚 The team will contribute to Django

Marco Richetta - Navigator

marco richetta

I'm Marco from Córdoba, Argentina.
I've been doing things with software for +5 years, mostly focused on web development with Python.

I've been wanting to get back to my roots for a while now, meaning being closer to the Python/Django community.
When I first started out, I spent a lot of time on the Django forum or on Reddit, helping people and also asking questions myself, but over time I drifted away due to various reasons. Participating in the Djangonaut Space program is one awesome way of getting back to doing what I enjoy.

A quote I like: "Solving problems with code and helping people are two things I really enjoy and with open source, I’ve found the best of both worlds. I like seeing that what I do makes people’s daily lives a little bit better."

Felipe Villegas - Captain

felipe villegas

Using the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown as the perfect excuse to finally learn programming in his mid 40s, Felipe completed the entire 3,000+ hour freeCodeCamp curriculum in the span of 4 months in 2021. Soon after, while managing a small company, he found the perfect opportunity to apply his newly acquired skills to develop a Django application that would eventually grow to become the backbone of the bulk of the company’s operations. Hooked on his experience with Django, Felipe decided to continue honing his development skills after leaving the company in early 2025. Since then, he has been contributing to open source projects, working as a volunteer backend developer in social-impact projects, and learning as much as he can about applied AI to keep up with the changing times.

A Djangonaut Star, Felipe is thrilled to return to the Djangonaut Space program as a captain in Session 5.

Eric Sherman - Captain

eric sherman

Eric is a full stack developer, GIS consultant, and public policy expert. They are very passionate about empowering marginalized groups and the potential ways for art and technology to intersect to tell powerful, relevant stories.
They are a self taught software engineer, with over 10 years of experience.

They are also a multi-instrumentalist musician and like riding bike and going for walks in the woods.

They are also a founding board member of Chi Hack Night (https://chihacknight.org/) which is a weekly meetup event in Chicago (and the world) that focuses on topics around the intersection of technology and how it affects the public good.

Session introductions

session_5_intro_2

🚀 A new session means a fresh beginning for our Djangonauts! Each team embarks on this 8-week journey ready to learn, grow, and contribute together. Under the guidance of Navigators and Captains, Djangonauts will begin working on different projects, all with the same goal of contributing to the Django ecosystem.

Lots of enthusiasm at the Introduction Sessions, where the presentation gave an idea of what to expect during the program. Djangonaut Showcase, Guest speaker talks, and community events are great opportunities to learn and grow.

At Djangonaut Space, it's also important to celebrate every victory of Djangonauts, and we can't wait to see what wonderful achievements will come out during Session 5.

To infinity and beyond 🧑‍🚀
